Michael Green is a writer and holds the position of Professor in English and Creative Writing at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne. He holds degrees from the universities of Natal (BA Hons), Stanford (MA), and York (D.Phil).
Prior to joining Northumbria University, he was Senior Professor and Head of English at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, and then Head of the university’s School of Literary Studies, Media, and Creative Arts. He relocated to Northumbria University in September 2009 with the aim of returning to researching, teaching, and writing. In February 2009 he was inducted into the Society of the Fellows of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in recognition of distinguished academic achievements. This honour is conferred for life.
He has published a number of academic articles and chapters in scholarly books, mainly on uses of history in fiction. This is the subject of his book Novel Histories: Past, Present, and Future in South African Fiction. He is also the author (under the name Michael Cawood Green) of two works of historical fiction, his latest novel, For the Sake of Silence and Sinking: A Verse Novella .
